To those of you out there who are concerned global citizens living in or near the Hudson Valley area that are interested in simplifying life and living in a small, tight-knit community of like-minded, environmentally oriented individuals, I would like to open a discussion for a dream of mine, and one that I find is certainly not uncommon amongst my peers.
As I’m sure you are all aware, human impacts on the planet are creating some serious problems, to put it simply. There are a wide variety of theories about how human civilization will adapt to these changes, but ultimately, from my perspective, a conversion in some part of the world’s populations to radically simpler lifestyles will, at the very least, be part of the solution on top of creating the possibility for a beautiful, honest life we can create with our own hard work and imagination. I meet many people around the area who share my interest in returning to the land, but, sadly, due to today’s economic marketplace, the ultimate barrier to obtaining the land and resources to make this idea viable is the financial obligation, as well as the general difficulty of finding other back-to-landers, organizing, and making things actually happen. I, therefore, would like to put out some feelers and see if any of you out there are interested in such a thing so we can connect, pool resources, and see if we will be a good fit for each other’s visions.
I’m a 31 year old guy living in the Shawangunk area of the Hudson Valley with experience in a lot of different outdoor occupations — some farming, some gardening, some construction, etc. Always been a bit of a jack-of-all-trades. Without setting too narrow of a parameter, I would like to try and keep the age brackets between 20 and 45 (though children of those in that bracket are welcome). I don’t want to be ageist, but I know the early stages will be very difficult physically, so it will probably be the most beneficial to have people in their physical primes to get that leg-work taken care of before we start taking on more age-diverse members. I also would like to set a minimum nest-egg limit of 10k. Again, don’t want to vet good people out, but this idea will require a good chunk of change, so I’m going to need interested people who also have some savings put aside to contribute.
My goal is to purchase a large acreage somewhere in the Hudson Valley where we can establish an intentional community, community farm, homestead, or something generally in that vein. I don’t want to be hyper-specific, but I think you get the gist. Ideally, from my end, a nexus of traditional agriculture/homesteading with hunter/gathering and food forestry. If things go well, I thought it would be pretty nifty to start a homesteading institute where other interested people can come learn about how to best jump into that lifestyle and learn skills so they can feel more comfortable in their own transition. Anywho, these are just my thoughts. I’m open to different interpretations within reason. If you meet the parameters and are interested in talking about the possibility, please just send me a little message about yourself and we can open that discussion. Thank you for reading, hope all is well, and have a nice day.
