This is an authentic vintage LOUIS VUITTON Speedy bag/purse made by the French Company in the US under special license. Probably from the 1970's. Does show wear from age and a few stains on inside--see the pics- and has a slight musty smell from being stored for years in a basement. I have the original key (broken near top) also. DID MY RESEARCH:
"During the early 1970s Louis Vuitton became very popular in US but their items were manufactured in France. Due to the large demand in the US, Louis Vuitton expanded the brand by joining with a US luggage maker - The French Luggage Company (US's most prestigious luggage company). The French Company made bags under a special license from Louis Vuitton in the US starting the mid 70’s and going through the early 90’s. Items were sold exclusively at large department stores such as ... Saks Fifth Avenue (this one also has a Saks label).
The French Company items don’t have a date code like we see on Louis Vuitton items today, and their embossing is also different. They have a Tyvek tag (paper-like) sewn into the seam of the bag on which it says that the item was made under a special license and that it was made in the USA. Because the Tyvek tag could be easily removed or damaged, the vintage French Company Louis Vuitton items that originally had the tag no longer do. So vintage bags have no tag unless it has the Tyvek one. (this one does have the paper-like label, as shown).
The French Company hardware is also different from current Louis Vuitton hardware used today. It has plated nickel instead of gold-tone and brass and it is not embossed with Louis Vuitton name or logo. The rivets are not embossed; they are plain and smooth. The French Company used zipper pulls by Talon or Eclair and luggage pieces may have C&C. The zipper pull on French Company Speedys have a tuck lock system often combined with a Talon zipper pull (as does this one). The French Company did not use the untreated natural vachetta leather like they use current day. They used various coating treatments in shades of leather to protect the vachetta, so the leather is caramel color and not patina. The coating treatment helps to protect the naked vachetta and make it sturdier.
The vintage French Company bags often have brown cotton lining (as does this one) or off-white heather-like linen lining." "The one instance where you might see the LV cut off that doesn't indicate a fake is on a French Company bag... The French Company, pieced their bags together so that the design was right side up on all sides (as does this one). These bags always have a leather seam running the length of their bottoms." (as does this one).
